The article presents the initial results of a broader research project conducted on archival and printed sources, aimed at exploring, through a prosopographical approach, the biography and work of the different generations of scholars who, from national unification to the Secon World War, held the chairs of Aesthetics and Art History in the Fine Arts Academies of the peninsula. In particular, it delves into the profiles and fundamental orientations of the teaching of the first two generations of teachers of historical-artistic disciplines: the one appointed by provisional and dictatorial governments of central and southern Italy in the period 1860-1861 and then during the first post-unification decade, and the subsequent one, called to perform the same role in the 1870s and 1880s.
