Presentation of the journal
Picenum Seraphicum - Rivista di studi storici e francescani
(ISSN 0392-1689, E-ISSN 2385-1341)
was founded in 1915 by Father Ciro Ortolani as a historical supplement to the periodical Il crocifisso redentore. It featured articles on the history of the Franciscans in the Marche region, contributing to the profound reflections on Seraphic history sparked by the publications of Paul Sabatier and the emergence of what historians still refer to as the “Franciscan question”. After just four years, the publication ceased its activity, only to reappear in 1969 on the initiative of a group of scholars from the Order of Friars Minor led by Father Giacinto Pagnani. The reborn editorial project first published the proceedings of conferences dedicated to s. Giacomo della Marca, which were attended by numerous specialists in Minorite history, and then new research on the themes of Franciscanism in the Marche region and local history, with particular attention to the developments of the most recent ongoing debates. This successful period (which can be considered the second series) was interrupted by the issue 1984-1987, published after Pagnani's death. It was only in 1999 that the agreement reached by the Friars Minor, in the person of the then director of the Order's Biblioteca storico-francescana e picena, Father Bernardino Pulcinelli, with Professor Roberto Lambertini of the University of Macerata, made it possible to revive the journal, which has also been available online with open access since 2014.

Area of interest
Picenum Seraphicum aims to contribute to the understanding of the historical significance of the Franciscan presence in the Marche region. To accomplish this task, the journal focuses on the network of relationships between Franciscans and other institutional entities in the area, both ecclesiastical and secular. The context relevant to a better understanding of the events of Minorite life in the Marche region includes the economic, social, political and cultural environment in which the Franciscans were involved, placing themselves in a web of mutual influences. For this reason, Picenum Seraphicum is gradually including in its issues more wide-ranging studies in the field of Franciscan studies, encouraging discussion on different topics and research methodologies, and promoting comparison with different geographical contexts.

Frequency of publication
When it was founded, Picenum Seraphicum was published every two months, becoming quarterly in 1917 and annual in 1969. After a period of irregularity, it became definitively annual in 2017.
