In this paper, the authors aim to reflect on the significance of one of Giorgio Chiosso’s most recent works. Drawing on an analysis of the author’s book, this provides a welcome opportunity to highlight certain principles and characteristics of the Catholic presence within the Italian school system and to understand the role religion played in Italian state schools. Chiosso’s research work also deserves credit for success fully highlighting three formative experiences, three crucial stages in the development of pedagogical self-awareness within the Catholic sphere, three “figures” who left their mark on their era and served as a point of reference for those in our country who have been involved in schooling, instruction, education and training.
