This paper aims to reconstruct the twenty-year history of the international scientific journal «History of Education & Children’s Literature» (HECL), founded and directed since 2006 by Prof. Roberto Sani and still today an essential point of reference in Italian, European and extra-European historical-educational studies. Through the examination of some unpublished archive documents and the quantitative and qualitative analysis of all the issues published by the journal, the authors focus their attention on the role played by this journal, over the last twenty years, in the development process of Italian historical-educational research and in the growth and renewal of such studies also at an international level. The authors, after having presented the project that characterized the genesis and birth of the journal, then focus on the most significant results obtained from the dissemination of the results of the most authoritative European and extra-European pedagogical historiography and on the key role played by the magazine in promoting sector research conducted in Italy as well as for the inclusion of Italian scholars themselves, especially the youngest, within the international scientific context.
