The essay reconstructs the history of CIRSE (Italian Center for Historical-Educational Research) starting from before its appearance in 1980, with the aim of highlighting the contents, methodologies and research perspectives of previous studies and therefore the motivations which promoted its founding. The analysis below highlights the objectives and operational lines gradually pursued in almost half a century of its existence, not only ignoring the external difficulties but also those internal which have gradually occurred.
