Abstract

The essay describes the development of an ongoing innovative project to create an online model for studying serial sculpture created from lost-wax casting through 3-D scans of the casts. As a case study, serial sculptures by Medardo Rosso (1858-1928) in wax, plaster, and bronze were chosen to be scanned. Scanning makes possible the visualization of details that are difficult to detect with the naked eye and to make comparisons that bring out specific regions of similarities and differences, allowing for visualizations of patterns. The result will be the first dynamic and interactive digital resource dedicated to serial sculpture. The goal is to contribute an interdisciplinary tool for teaching, study and conservation of the works, enabling specialists, students, artists and the public to compare various casts and conduct virtual manipulation of sculptures in order to better understand their morphology and the processes of casting.
