Abstract in English
This paper is dedicated to a topic that represented a difficult problem for medieval philosophers and with which Francis of Marchia also struggled: the first sin of the angel and his consequent fall. The issue is addressed by the theologian in question 47 of the commentary on the Second Book of Sentences, where Doctor Succintus asks the question whether it is possible for the will to act against a rational judgement formulated by the intellect. The editors of Francis’ text have already dealt with the content of this question, summarising it in its fundamental passages; here, starting from the work already done by these specialists, we wish to propose a closer examination of the specific theme mentioned earlier, so as to confirm Francis of Marchia’s belonging to the “voluntarist” school and his debt to his master John Duns Scotus. To do this, we have analysed the opinions of two “intellectualist” authors, whom we have compared with Francis on the same issue of interest to us: Thomas Aquinas and Godfrey of Fontaines.

Questo contributo indaga un argomento che ha rappresentato un problema difficile per i filosofi medievali e con cui si è misurato anche Francesco d’Appignano: il primo peccato dell’angelo e la sua conseguente caduta. Il tema è affrontato dal teologo nella questione 47 del commento al Secondo Libro delle Sentenze, dove il Doctor Succintus si chiede se sia possibile per la volontà agire contro un giudizio razionale formulato dall’intelletto. Gli editori del testo di Francesco hanno già trattato il contenuto di questa questione, riassumendola nei suoi passaggi fondamentali; qui, partendo dal lavoro già svolto da questi specialisti, si propone un esame più approfondito del tema, per confermare l’appartenenza dell’appignanese alla scuola “volontarista” e il suo debito nei confronti del maestro Giovanni Duns Scoto. A tal fine, in relazione al pensiero di Francesco, si sono confrontate le opposte opinioni di due autori “intellettualisti”, Tommaso d’Aquino e Goffredo di Fontaines.
