Social Studies Lessons at Pazarören Village Institute in Turkey: An Oral History Study

Abstract

This study examines the historical perspective of social studies lessons taught at Pazarören Village Institute. The research is based on oral history interviews with a graduated teacher from the institute. The study seeks to understand the content of the social studies lessons, teaching methods used, extracurricular activities, and the impact of the lessons on students. During the interview, information was gathered about how the lessons were conducted, what materials were used, how teaching techniques were shaped, and how the social studies course contributed to the development of the village community. Additionally, the teacher’s thoughts on the educational philosophy of the village institutes and the role of social studies in modern education are also explored. This
study aims to understand better the educational philosophy and practices of social studies lessons at Pazarören Village Institute. Based on the findings of this study, contemporary education systems, especially in rural areas, can be inspired by the village institute model. In addition, conducting more oral history research with other teachers or graduates of Pazarören Village Institute can better understand the education system’s impact and ideas for improving contemporary education methods.
