This paper focuses on the interest that educational heritage has attracted within Italian historical-educational research, as well as within national and international museums and associations. Within this framework, the article reconstructs the reasons that led to the institution of the Italian Society for the Study of Historical-Educational Heritage (SIPSE) and the early years of activity of this new society. During these early years, SIPSE has carved out an active role in the research on, protection, and dissemination of educational heritage, establishing solid connections not only with the Italian and international scientific community, but also with various sectors of civil society concerned in various ways with the cultural heritage of education.
