Abstract in italiano
Abstract in English
This paper examines the position of Francis of Appignano on the question of the colocation of bodies, i.e. the possibility of several bodies simultaneously occupying the same place. Although this problem belongs to the philosophy of nature, Francis examines it in the context of distinction XLVIII, q. 63 of the commentary on the fourth book of the Sentences. The whole of the question offers a close analysis of five contemporary opinions, which Francis criticizes before formulating his own solution. This consists in affirming the supernatural possibility (by divine virtue) of the colocation of bodies starting from the scotist concept of formal and/or virtual incompatibility or opposition. Like Duns Scotus, Francis undertakes to show that in such a case divine action remains within the limits of what is possible because not being contradictory.
