The paper aims to examine the character of Luigi Paolucci through the study of his archive, preserved in Biblioteca storico francescana e Picena “San Giacomo della Marca” of Falconara Marittima. By examining the documents, the biographical profile of the d istinguished naturalist has been reconstructed trying to highlight the stature of the scholar and trying to reflect on his legacy, now expressed in the Museo regionale marchigiano di Storia naturale named after him, and in the Herbarium conserved at the Bo tanical Garden of the Polytechnic University of Marche region. Paolucci made the precepts of positivism and evolution his own and his archive shows a multifaceted character: in carrying out his teaching and scientist activity he embraces the Risorgimento i deals, presenting himself at the same time positivist and romantic, an acute linguist and a narrator. His career was focused on teaching and research: he made important studies on the flora and fauna of the Marche region and created the first regional muse um of natural history in which he collected important collections (birds, reptiles, fish, chemistry and physics tools). The paper ends with an inventory of the archive by Massimo Bonifazi, accompanied by an introduction that describes the work done and the partitions of the documentary collection.
