This paper seeks to provide an outline of the historical and cultural background of the former “S. Francesco ad Alto” church, one of the most important religious establishments of Ancona in the time span from 16th century to 1861 62, when the church and the convent buildings became state owned. The research focuses on the study and analysis of the church internal rooms and on the identification of the family chapels owned by the noble families belonging to the local patricians. Data collected so far, a rema rkable amount of which are still unpublished, allowed to outline individually the main historical events of the chapels (afterwards dismantled and emptied of the art masterpieces) and to present, at the same time, details about the different families who w ere granted and were holding the “jus patronatus” privilege throughout centuries.
