The activity of the Italian Inquisition in the first half of the 14th century appears to be awkward and subject to contrasts by the local context from many points of view, religious, political and economic. The critical edition of the trial of 1346-47 against the inquisitor of the Marchia Anconetana Pietro from Penna San Giovanni OFM by the judge in spiritualibus of the Marchia, on the mandate of the papal legate, makes it possible to reflect on all these areas: the impact on lay religiosity, the financial abuses by some inquisitors, the formation of groups of influence within the Franciscan order (perhaps with some correspondence with the jagged political framework) and finally the effort of the papacy (and its local representatives) to regulate the ‘inquisitorial autonomy’ and submit it to regular payments to the Apostolic Chamber.
