The complex personality of Enrico del Carretto, franciscan intellectual, theologian, cleric, bishop of Lucca and an influential figure within the Avignonese Curia, has been the subject of a concise biographical essay by Christine Meek, published in the Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani (Rome 1988). Yet, after this short paper, the historical dimension of Enrico del Carretto’s life hasn’t been investigated more thoroughly, while his works and his intellectual personality were being analyzed in depth. The present article aims at filling this gap, focusing upon Enrico’s bishopric and his stay in Lucca in the early 14th century. Thanks to extant Lucchese sources, some interesting elements come to light concerning the many problems which Enrico had to confront while in Lucca in the difficult years of the early Trecento, a period of political clashes and disorder. Enrico was soon involved in a conflict with some members of the cathedral Chapter and against the Comune di Popolo, whose aggressive intrusiveness the Franciscan bishop tried to oppose, strongly defending the bishopric’s rights and prerogatives.
