The article provides analysis and context for Francis of Marchia’s treatment of augmentation of forms in his Commentary on the Sentences, book, I, distinction 17, q. 3. It compares Marchia’s position with the Aristotelian legacy, with the positions of of outstanding scholastic thinkers such as Aquinas, Henry of Gent and especially with his contemporary Walter Burley. The author maintains that Marchia’s solution is original, because his account is more based on quantity than on quality.
