Abstract

In recent decades university – conceived as a site of training, knowledge production, and career formation – and its history have become an integral chapter of the history of education. This reframing has been shaped by historians of education who, thanks to the work of research centres, conferences and several journals, have woven together micro and macro-level analyses, thematic foci, and geographical scales. The result is a coherent picture in which the university, a central educational institution of modernity, becomes a privileged field of inquiry for rethinking the methods, sources, and aims of the history of education.
