Modern Italian economic development is linked to global economic trends and the social forces that have taken turns at the helm of state, economy, and politics. Liberalist at the time of the Destra Storica of liberal-conservative extraction and protectionist at the time of the Sinistra Storica, Italy reached a certain industrial strength only at the turn of the century. This essay, tracing the economic history of liberal Italy, seeks to highlight how the industrial-capitalist take-off of the peninsula is a consequence of both endogenous choices made by a particular social group and the result of the trend of the global economy and a specific class structure. Productive and social inhomogeneity has not prevented Italy from successfully setting up a modern industrial-capitalist policy.
