Abstract

The article is devoted to examining historical and pedagogical aspects of the development of foreign language education in Ukraine, with the focus on the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. The specifics of teaching foreign languages in schools and gymnasiums are analyzed. Differences and similarities of foreign language training in parts of Ukraine belonging to the Russian and Austria-Hungarian Empires are highlighted; main stages in the formation of the national system of teaching foreign languages are outlined. In the second half of the 19th century language education is gaining new significance with the appearance of ‘modern languages’ courses, which opens up opportunities for the development of humanitarian education and training of teaching staff in the field of language education at the beginning 20th century.
