Abstract

Among the major American art collectors and patrons of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Jayne Wrightsman played a leading role within the United States museum and art scene in the years spanning from the early 1950s to 2019, the year of her death. However, while much is known about her collection and philanthropic activities, almost nothing is known about the path she took to develop precise knowledge in the art history field. Through the analysis of the unpublished correspondence exchanged between her and the well-known art historian Bernard Berenson, this study aims to reconstruct the main stages that marked Jayne Wrightsman’s education and training in art history. Its purpose is to shed light on the path she took towards becoming one of the leading players in the United States’ cultural and artistic scene in the 20th and 21st centuries.
