Abstract

In questo articolo, si affronterà il caso di un museo interessante realizzato dallo studio di Renzo Piano negli anni Novanta: la Cy Twombly Gallery presso la Menil Collection di Houston. Qui, l’architetto ed il suo studio si trovano di fronte alla progettazione di un museo connesso direttamente alla Menil Collection, costruita dallo stesso Piano. Insieme a Dominique de Menil e al direttore Paul Winkler, iniziano un progetto per dare destinazione alle opere del pittore e scultore americano Cy Twombly, che mantiene un determinante ruolo attivo dall’inizio alla fine. Attraverso una completa ricerca d’archivio svoltasi ai Menil Archives di Houston, si ricostruiranno le tappe del progetto per la Cy Twombly Gallery, utile per capire la posizione e l’approccio dell’architetto nei confronti di un legato artistico. Questa sarà infatti l’unica volta in cui Piano dovrà veramente confrontarsi con un artista vivente e vedremo come andrà incontro alle sue esigenze in modo rigoroso, adattando la sua visione alle idee specifiche di Cy Twombly, grazie all’aiuto del curatore Paul Winkler.

This article will focus on an interesting museum designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop in the 1990s: the Cy Twombly Gallery at the Menil Collection in Houston. The architect and his studio face the project of a new museum, directly connected to the Menil Collection, previously designed by Piano. Together with Dominique de Menil and the director Paul Winkler, the team created a building to host the works of the American painter and sculptor Cy Twombly, which maintained an active role in this process. Through a complete archive research, carried out at the Menil Archives in Houston, all the stages of the project for the Cy Twombly Gallery will be historically retraced and analysed, with the aim to understand the position and approach of the architect towards an artistic legacy. In fact, this is the only time that Piano had to deal with a living artist for a monographic museum. The result of the research is to comprehend how he met Twombly’s needs in a rigorous way, adapting his vision to the artist’s specific ideas, thanks to the help of curator Paul Winkler.
