Abstract

Carlo Fruttero’s novella Ti trovo un po’ pallida (1979) was explicitly conceived as a
way of negotiating the ghost story genre – which Fruttero believed to be quintessentially
‘Northern’ – with a Mediterranean setting, employing irony as its primary means. My
analysis demonstrates instead that the ironical tone overtly pervading the novella conceals
in fact deeper shadows, and that Ti trovo un po’ pallida can be fully ascribed to what I
previously, and provisionally, termed the intimately Italian «“purgatorial” way to ghost
stories».
