This contribution examines character as an anthropological problem, by comparing the emergence of the ‘human-character’ in Debenedetti with a need, endemic to Structuralism, to define narrative subjectivities by means of less anthropocentric terms. Thus, literary anthropology, Structuralism and Debenedetti’s criticism of life are seen as moments of literary theory, which an archaeological method – taking the term from Foucault – can describe by accounting for what shapes its concepts.
