Abstract

Based on some oppositional polarities such as natural/artificial, public/individual, motion/ stagnation as well as on the concepts of otherness, distance and lighness, this article proposes an interpretation of Leopardi’s Elogio degli uccelli through anthropological- political hints. In the figure of the small birds, in their musical voice full of joy, and in their hyperdynamic flight, the poet sees in fact the emblem of sincere happiness, but also of a democratic relativism and an extraordinary ethical-existential cosmopolitanism; he also grasps the metaphor of a pure dreamy poetic writing, free from contingent trappings and full of imagination.
