Starting from the correspondence between the Bishop of Osimo and the Roman
Inquisition, the contribution examines a case of book censorship of 1773 on a work of the minor franciscan Giuseppe Felice Bartolini focused on married life, relating in particular to parts of the text commenting the intimate relation between spouses. Through the dialectic between the instances of control and the changed perception regarding the mora l and sexual customs of the period, the case allows to analyze the positions of the ecclesiastical hierarchy, of the individual author and of the religious literature dedicated to the theme of the relationship between married cuoples, all aimed at maintain ing the role of moral hegemony on the customs of the laity.
