Oggetto dello studio sono alcuni esemplari di lettere collettive di indulgenza – una tipologia documentaria non molto conosciuta, poco trattata nei manuali di diplomatica e anche priva di una letteratura scientifica significativa – conservati in alcuni archivi di Ascoli Piceno. Si tratta di lettere emanate ciascuna da alcune decine di prelati tra arcivescovi e vescovi che concedono giorni di indulgenza ai visitatori di istituzioni religiose che si intende favorire, e caratterizzate dalla presenza di un cospicuo numero di sigilli appesi sulla plica. I documenti presi in considerazione sono particolarmente meritevoli di attenzione perché, nel panorama dei casi noti, si inseriscono in maniera ‘marginale’ e ‘singolare’, per tipologia ed epoca, essendo piuttosto risalenti (anni 1286, 1297 e 1298) e presentando pertanto caratteristiche esteriori diverse da quelle standardizzate che caratterizzano la produzione in serie della massa di lettere collettive prodotte ad Avignone, dopo il trasferimento della corte pontificia, appena qualche decennio più tardi.
Subject of the study are some examples of collective letters of indulgence – a documentary type not very well known, little treated in diplomatic manuals and also lacking significant scientific literature – stored in some archives of Ascoli Piceno. These letters are issued each by a few dozen prelates between archbishops and bishops that grant days of indulgence to visitors of religious institutions that are intended to be favored, and characterized by the presence of a large number of seals hanging on the plica. The documents taken into account are particularly worthy of attention because they fit in a 'marginal' and 'singular' way in the framework of known cases. They have in fact peculiar formal features and are quite early (years 1286, 1297 and 1298), presenting therefore external characteristics different from the standardized ones that characterize the mass of collective letters produced in Avignon, after the transfer of the papal court, just a few decades later.
