Abstract

Through performance art, in which her own body is the central material, the Guatemalan artist Regina José Galindo denounces the harsh reality of violence and exploitation in her country, linking the issue to the wounds feminicide and discrimination suffered by LGTBIQ+ people and indigenous peoples, pollution, genocide, police violence – inflicted anywhere on the planet. Since 2007, performances that narrate the dynamics and dimensions of migration have gradually increased in number. Numerous performances explore the dimension of the body deprived of freedom, forced into confined spaces, separation and isolation; they retrace what happens in prisons and on illegal journeys to cross borders, while others recount the life that continues to make its way and flow in other lands.
