Thanks to the contribution offered by neurosciences, some researchers have, recently, started being interested in issues – like the possibility to foretell the deviant behavior of a person – that seemed, by now, to be not scientifically relevant. The article, introduced by briefly mentioning the use that science fiction literature made of this idea, proposes a historical reconstruction of the search for the “mark of Cain”, as we may say using a picturesque expression. The almost compulsory starting point of this path of research cannot be but the studies carried out by Cesare Lombroso on the criminal man, since the final decades of the nineteenth century. The arrival point is represented by the use of the latest neuroscientific discoveries that has been recently made in the courtrooms.
