Abstract

The article focuses on the institution of presidency of the USA in the context of historical evolvement and further influence on the polity of other states. In particular, it states that the 1787 Constitution of the United States contained a number of novelties, which contributed to constitutional and national development in most countries globally, including, inter alia, separation of powers and establishment of a completely new institution, the President, which proved to be an entirely new democratic mechanism. The article claims that the institution at issue has still been operating in an efficient and uninterrupted manner, and conducts analysis of the respective reasons for such phenomenon. Special emphasis is placed on current developments in the US presidency from perspective of the 2016 election campaign. The article gives detailed descriptions of the procedure for the President’s election, paying special attention to “electoral college” as the most conspicuous feature of US political culture. The article discusses a wide range of international issues connected with the role of the US President and their possible outcomes and implications globally. Concluding that the victory of Donald Trump demonstrates the efficiency of presidency of the USA, the research turns to considering ways in which the key mechanisms of this institution can apply to other states throughout the world.
