Biografia autore

Antonino Crisà, Ghent University, Department of Archaeology

A classicist, archaeologist and numismatist with a strong academic record and several skills in teaching, coin cataloging, archival research and 3-year experience in commercial archaeology.
My main fields of research are Sicilian archaeology (cultural heritage, antiquarianism, collecting and excavations, history of the discipline) and numismatics.
I am currently working as an ERC 'Marie Skłodowska-Curie' Research Fellow at Ghent University (project: 'Cultural Heritage in Danger: Archaeology and Communities in Sicily during the Second World War (1940–45)'). My research seeks to understand the impact of WW2 on Sicilian antiquities, including archaeological sites and museums.
I have previously worked as a 'Research Fellow' at the University of Warwick (2016-19) within the ERC 'Token Communities in the Ancient Mediterranean' project and researching on tokens found in Sicily (archaeological contexts, iconographies and history of antiquarian collecting) and 'Teaching Assistant' at the University of Leicester (2012-16).
My PhD Archaeology thesis, now revised and published as a monograph (Archaeopress 2018), focused on the history of archaeology in northern Sicily during the post-Unification period (1861-1918), exploring historical and social contexts, the evolution of discipline between 19th and 20th centuries and the impact of archaeology on local communities. This research is a direct continuation of my monograph on northern Sicily archaeology during the Bourbon period (1816-1860) (BAR 2012).
I am also the official numismatist of Calvatone-Bedriacum and Tadmor-Palmyra excavations (University of Milan).
