The museum in the palm of your hand: presenting the Israel Museum through ICT

Abstract

L'Israel Museum è la più grande istituzione culturale dello Stato di Israele ed è considerato uno dei musei d'arte e archeologici più importanti del mondo. Fondato nel 1965, il Museo ospita quasi 500.000 oggetti, distribuiti tra le sue collezioni enciclopediche, che vanno dalla preistoria all'arte contemporanea e comprendono la più ampia raccolta di archeologia biblica e deella Terra Santa nel mondo. Questo contributo presenta il museo visto attraverso la sua impronta elettronica - ovvero il suo sito web bilingue. La versione elettronica del museo non solo riflette la portata e la qualità delle sue collezioni, che comprendono arti visive, archeologia, arte e vita ebraiche; presenta infatti testimonianze della storia della cultura mondiale, da circa un milione di anni fa ad oggi, ma promuove anche i numerosi eventi e le attività culturali ed educative che si svolgono nel campus del museo durante tutto l'anno.

The Israel Museum is the largest cultural institution in the State of Israel and is ranked among the leading art and archaeology museums in the world. Founded in 1965, the Museum houses nearly 500,000 objects across its encyclopedic collections, ranging from prehistory through contemporary art and includes the most extensive holdings of Biblical and Holy Land archaeology in the world. This chapter will present the museum as viewed through its electronic footprint - its bi-lingual website. The electronic delivery of the museum not only reflects the sense of the scope and quality of its collections including: fine art, archaeology, and Jewish art and life; presenting the history of world culture from nearly one million years ago to the present day, but also the many events, and cultural and educational activities that go on in the museum campus throughout the year.
