Auerbach’s writings contain some isolated yet crucial intuitions regarding the interpretation of Provençal poetry, especially as far as its allegoric dimension is concerned. An analysis of Auerbach’s sources shows that Eduard Wechssler’s book Das Kulturproblem des Minnesangs probably helped him to become aware of the presence of neo-platonic elements within Occitan lyrics. Furthermore, the fact that Arnaut de Maroill is mentioned in the handbook published in 1943 can be explained through Auerbach’s perception of a strong mystical-allegoric subtext in Bel m’es quan lo vens m’alena (BEdT 30.10), that is Arnaut’s only canso which was certainly known to Auerbach. This proves the researcher’s attentive reading also of trobadors not mentioned by Dante.
