Abstract

Far from limiting itself to a semantic history of the word, Auerbach’s famous essay entitled ‘Figura’ (1938) inexplicitly hosts a theory of reading that harks back to the Christian phenomenon of the ‘will to exegesis’. Distinguishing between ‘figurale Interpretation’ and ‘Figuraldeutung’, understood as an explanation of a sphere of oscillation in which the significance (Bedeutung) becomes presignificance (Vordeutung), this article explores the structural stratifications (lexical and categorical) of a methodical approach that has proved profoundly fruitful from a conceptual point of view.
