Abstract

The role of the Church and Catholic culture throughout Spanish history has penetrated
and dominated individual consciences and the collective imagination, producing in the social
fabric and individual consciences an inner conflict and a controversial relationship with
religious symbols and ecclesiastical figures. The popular perception of 'Iberian Catholicism',
characterised by a powerful, pervasive and gloomy image, has deeply innervated the most
original and significant part of Spanish fantasy cinema, forming the basis of an original
identity that, over time, has developed infinite interpretations and variations on the theme.
