Abstract

Hylemorphism Today: State of Play and Perspectives

This paper investigates the uses of the concepts of form and hylomorphism in contemporary philosophy. It aims at providing a comparative analysis of the various applications of hylomorphism in different fields of philosophy. The first part of the paper studies how the concept was employed in 20th-century philosophy by two French thinkers – René Thom and Gilbert Simondon. Then, the paper focuses on the most recent (from the 1980s onwards) uses of form and hylomorphism and offers concluding remarks about the differences between the traditional (Aristotelian) version of hylomorphism and these recent trends.
