Abstract

In the collection of the National Archaeological Museum of Madrid there are five big navicella-type fibulae, whose pin holder ends with a human or a monkeyalike head, a type mainly attested in the Picenean material culture. Most fibulae of certain provenance come from the necropolises of Sirolo-Numana and Verucchio. The data from the burial contexts of the latter site indicate a slightly higher chronology for the fibulae found there, giving a hint on a possible role of Verucchio in the development of this very type of items. The study also offer a presentation and discussion of the
X-Ray fluorescence analyses conduced on some specimens from the Madrid collection.
